Quick Answer
VDV MapMaster 3.0: wiremap including split pairs, length to 1,000 ft, and ID remotes for up to 20 runs.
LanSeeker: a pass or fail wiremap check with built-in tone and no display.
Neither of ours tests PoE or link speed. Fluke lists both for the MicroScanner2, so if you need them, that is the one to look at.

VDV MapMaster 3.0: wiremap, length and run ID
The VDV MapMaster 3.0 is for installers who need wiremap, length and tone in one unit.
What it does well:
- Wiremap to T568A or T568B, including opens, shorts, miswires, reversals and split pairs. It can find shorts and split pairs from one end, without the remote.
- Length from 0 to 1,000 ft (305 m), accurate to plus or minus 3% plus 1 ft. The reading comes from capacitance, not TDR.
- ID remotes that identify up to 20 runs. One remote comes with the tester; numbered ID remotes for more runs are bought separately.
- 4 selectable tone cadences.
- Shielded or unshielded cable from Cat3 to Cat7, and coax.
- 10.8 oz with battery and remote, a 2.75 in backlit monochrome display, and a 1-year limited warranty.
What it does not do: test PoE, detect link speed or certify a link. Its length range is 1,000 ft, so check that against your longest runs.
LanSeeker: a pass or fail check
The LanSeeker is the simpler of the two. It gives a pass or fail wiremap result in about 2 seconds, on four pair lights, a shield light, four fault lights and a tone light. It also has built-in tone.
Who it is for: anyone who needs to know a cable is good, quickly, and does not need to see the fault on a screen.
What it does not do: show a display, test PoE, detect link speed or certify. Platinum does not list a length reading or run identification for it.
When you need what ours do not do
Check these four things before you buy the MapMaster or the LanSeeker:
- PoE and port speed. Fluke lists both for the MicroScanner2: it detects 802.3af PoE devices and the advertised speed of 10, 100 and 1000 Mbps ports. Neither the MapMaster nor the LanSeeker does either.
- Finding the switch port. Klein lists a hub blink mode on the Scout Pro 3 to identify the port on a hub or switch. The MapMaster has a Port Link-Blink function for the same job; use it on ports that are not powering PoE, because the tester is rated to 50 V. Platinum does not list one for the LanSeeker.
- Runs longer than 1,000 ft. Fluke lists length to 1,500 ft and Klein to 2,000 ft. The MapMaster's range is 1,000 ft.
- Certification. None of these four certifies a link to TIA limits. That takes a certifier; ours are quote-only, so request a quote. See cable tester vs certifier for the difference.
We do not sell the MicroScanner2 or the Scout Pro 3.
How to choose
- Do you need PoE or link speed? If yes, look at the MicroScanner2. Neither the MapMaster nor the LanSeeker tests either one.
- Do you need to see the fault? A display (MapMaster, MicroScanner2, Scout Pro 3) shows which wire. The LanSeeker shows pass or fail.
- How long are your runs? Check the length range against your longest run.
- How many runs do you identify at once? Count the remotes you need.
- Do you test coax too? The MapMaster, MicroScanner2 and Scout Pro 3 all list coax.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the VDV MapMaster 3.0 test PoE?
No. The MapMaster checks wiremap, length and run ID, and puts tone on a run. It does not test PoE or link speed.
Does the MapMaster find split pairs?
Yes. It tests wiremap including split pairs, and it can find shorts and split pairs from one end without the remote.
What does the Klein Scout Pro 3 test?
Klein lists data, voice and coax cable; open, short, miswire and split pair faults; length up to 2,000 ft; and a hub blink mode to find a switch port. The VDV501-851 kit includes 5 RJ45 and 5 coax locator remotes.
What is the difference between the MicroScanner2 and the MapMaster?
Fluke lists PoE detection, Ethernet port speed detection and length to 1,500 ft for the MicroScanner2. The MapMaster has ID remotes for up to 20 runs and length to 1,000 ft, and does not test PoE or speed. Our MicroScanner vs MapMaster comparison goes into more detail.
Can any of these testers certify a cable?
No. Certifying to TIA limits takes a certifier. Ours are quote-only: request a quote.
Wiremap testers we sell
Both testers are in Cable Testers. For more comparisons, see Klein vs Fluke cable testers and MicroScanner vs MapMaster.
