A cable tester performs basic pass/fail checks like wiremap and continuity. A cable certifier performs full frequency sweep testing to verify the cable meets industry standards (like Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A). Certifiers provide detailed test reports required for warranty compliance and building inspections.

Certifying Cat6A requires a certifier that measures performance up to 500 MHz, such as the Fluke DSX2-5000 or Softing WireXpert 500 (both available by quote). The level below certification is qualification, which proves a link carries traffic at its rated speed rather than measuring it against TIA limits. CableTestShop does not currently stock a qualifier, so contractors who need that result on a specific job usually rent the instrument or subcontract the test.

Detection yes, measurement no. The Digital Tone & Probe Kit we stock has a powered-device mode that detects PoE: four LEDs show which pairs a switch port is actually powering, which tells you presence and pinout. Nothing we carry measures PoE voltage, identifies power sourcing equipment type, or reads wattage, so a full PoE audit still needs a dedicated PoE tester, which we do not sell. What we sell beyond that detection proves the cable the power runs on: wiremap, length, distance to fault, and split pairs on the run feeding the device. A large share of PoE complaints end at the cable, which makes it the cheapest thing to rule out first.

A VFL is a red laser light source that helps locate breaks, bends, and bad connections in fiber optic cables. The visible red light makes it easy to find faults, especially at patch panels and splice points.
