Can a tone and probe kit trace cable through walls?
Yes. The inductive amplifier probe picks up the tone signal through most drywall and building materials. Signal strength decreases with material thickness and distance, but in normal residential and commercial wall construction the tone is audible through the wall. A patch panel with tightly packed cables can reduce pickup sensitivity, and metallic conduit will block the signal.
Does the tone generator require a terminated cable end to work?
No. A tone generator can be connected to an unterminated cable end. It can also be connected at a patch panel or keystone jack without removing the cable from the jack. This makes it useful for tracing cables that are already installed and terminated at both ends.
Is a tone and probe kit the same as a cable certifier?
No. A tone and probe kit identifies and locates cable. It does not test for continuity, wiremap, or any electrical performance parameter. For wiremap testing, use a cable tester. For TIA-568 pass/fail certification, use a cable certifier.
