A 10 mW visible red laser lights the fiber end to end, so breaks, poorly seated connectors, bad splices, and tight bends show as a visible glow through the jacket with no trace to interpret. It also tells you which strand is which at a patch panel or splice tray, and it finds near-end faults inside the first few meters of a run, where an OTDR dead zone hides them.
